My Special Experience on Dussehra by Prachi Jha

My Special Experience on Dussehra

Every year when Dussehra arrives,  but it does not mean very much to me. Nor do I feel something special. In the morning I touch the feet of my elder, and after some time I start sending WhatsApp messages to my friend and teachers. Then I get busy with with the bit of homework assignments.
Then sometimes we go to temple. And then I play with my friends, eat and sleep.

Today was one of those 'sometimes' when we went to the temple on Dussehra along with my family half - heartedly. Though one part of my brain kept nagging about the fact that I should pray to God with full devotion, the other kept reminding it that this was not possible because there are hundreds of people around me talking, laughing and pushing each other. However for the first time, on my way to the temple, I saw a girl dancing on a rope, an old women asking for some money and two children requesting for some food.

Maybe I saw it every time but I had noticed it for the first time. I tried to ignore them but their requests for food and money kept ringing in my ears until I have all of them what they desired. As I gave money to the girl, her exasperated face brightened. As I gave money to the old lady, her face got suffused with happiness. And as I gave two bananas to both the children, who were now lying on the footpath hopelessly, I saw the their eyes full of hunger, illuminate with a small ray of hope.

And then I realised that festivals are not only about enjoying ourselves. They are about giving others also a chance to enjoy themselves.
